3.0L 2V VULCAN ENGINE - BLUE SMOKE ON START Up

FORD:
2004-2008 Ranger

ISSUE
Some 2004-2008 Ranger vehicles equipped with a 3.0L 2V Vulcan engine may exhibit blue smoke on start up after approximately a 4 hour cold soak.
This may be due to small amounts of oil commonly found in the PCV system collecting in the upper intake manifold PCV channel. Under certain parking
conditions, this oil can be drawn into the combustion chamber, creating momentary blue smoke that may be visible by the customer.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to reduce blue smoke on start up.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove the clamp on the PCV tube assembly at the PCV valve.

2. Remove the upper intake manifold per the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-01B. Leave the PCV tube assembly attached to the upper intake

manifold.

3. Remove the clamp on the PCV tube assembly at the upper intake manifold PCV port, and remove the PCV Tube Assembly from the upper intake

manifold PCV channel.

4. Drain the residual oil from the upper intake manifold PCV channel by holding the PCV channel vertical with the port facing down.

5. While holding the upper intake manifold in the vertical position, spray Brake Cleaner into the PCV channel. Use regulated compressed air to aid in

drying the PCV channel.

6. Lubricate the 0-Ring at the end of the new PCV Tube Assembly with water or diluted soapy water solution.

7. Install the new PCV Tube Assembly into the clean upper intake manifold PCV channel.

8. Install the upper intake manifold per WSM, Section 303-01B.
