Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair
Valve Seals
Removal and Installation
CAUTION: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material created while cleaning gasket surfaces
that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.
1. Remove the rocker arms.
2. NOTE: Install an air line with an adapter in the spark plug hole and turn on the air supply. If the air pressure fails to hold the valve(s) closed while
carrying out the following steps, valve or valve seat damage is indicated and the cylinder head must be removed.
NOTE: Apply a minimum of 689 kPa (100 psi) of compressed air to the cylinder.
Using the special tool, remove the valve spring retainer keys.
3. Remove the valve spring retainer.
4. Remove the valve spring and inspect. Refer to Engine for component tests for the valve spring.
5. Remove the valve stem seal.
6. CAUTION: Do not release the compressed air from the cylinder until after the valve spring retainer keys are installed, or the valve will
fall into the cylinder.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
