ISSUE
Some 2010-2011 Ranger and 2010 Explorer, Explorer Sport Trac and Mountaineer vehicles equipped with a 4.OL engine and less than 800 km (500
miles), may exhibit a rattle or ticking noise from the accessory drive belt tensioner after cold engine start when the ambient temperature is below -1
degree C (30 degrees F). The rattle or ticking noise is evident immediately after a cold start, with the engine idling, transmission in drive, and the brake
applied. The noise will not be present after the engine is warm or the ambient temperature is -1 degree C (30 degrees F) or higher.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verify vehicle odometer reading. Does odometer read less than 800 km (500 miles)?
a. Yes, proceed to step 2.
b. No, do not continue with this article. Follow normal diagnostics. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-05.
2. Using a stethoscope and with ambient temperature below -1 °C (30 °F), immediately after a cold start, engine idling, transmission in drive, and brake
applied, listen for a rattle or ticking noise from the accessory drive belt tensioner. Is noise present?
NOTE
WEATHER CONDITIONS MAY PREVENT ACCURATE VERIFICATION OF NOISE. IF CUSTOMER DESCRIBES CONCERN AS A
RATTLE OR TICKING NOISE AT IDLE, AFTER COLD START, TRANSMISSION IN DRIVE, BRAKE APPLIED, WITH AMBIENT
TEMPERATURE BELOW -1 °C (30 °F), WHICH GOES AWAY AFTER ENGINE WARM-UP, PROCEED TO STEP 3.
a. Yes, noise is present. Proceed to step 3.
b. No, noise is not present. Do not continue with this article. Follow normal diagnostics. Refer to WSM, Section 303-05.
3. Remove accessory drive belt tensioner. Refer to WSM, Section 303-05.
4. Using WD-40(R), lubricate drive belt tensioner as shown. Spray lubricant for approximately 5 seconds. (Figure 1)
