4.0L - LIGHT ENGINE TYPE KNOCKING/TAPPING OR 
FLUTTERING NOISE

FORD:
2010 Ranger

ISSUE
Some 2010 Ranger vehicles equipped with a 4.0L engine and built on or before 1/8/2010. Vehicles may exhibit a light knocking/tapping or fluttering
noise from the under hood, dashboard or instrument panel. The noise may vary with engine load or RPM and can be difficult to diagnose.

The noise is due to the powertrain control module (PCM) engine harness tapping against the wiper linkage access cover located on the center of the
bulkhead. See access cover location illustration in Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-16.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

To eliminate the noise:

1. Disconnect the wire harness attachment device at the coil pack bracket.

2. Use a tie-strap around the harness and the coil pack bracket at the engine attachment point.

NOTE

BE SURE TO TIGHTEN OR CINCH TIE-STRAP TIGHTLY TO PREVENT RUBBING AT THE BRACKET. BE SURE TO CUT-OFF OFF
THE EXCESS TIE-STRAP MATERIAL TO PREVENT IT FROM RATTLING AGAINST DASH.
