To verify that a shift handle assembly has been installed properly at assembly or during service on a shift lever that does not have a visual
inspection character line, use the following procedure:
^
Measure one inch from the top edge of the shift lever shaft (Figure 22) and mark with one inch masking tape.
^
Place the shift handle assembly on the shift lever shaft, being careful not to damage the lever mechanism.
^
Apply a sharp blow to the center of the shift handle with a rubber mallet.
When the bottom of the chrome ring on the handle has touched the tape, the handle is fully seated.
This procedure should be followed when using TSB 82-16-11 to service a sticking/binding condition of the shift lever button.
