TIRE SHAKE - OUT OF ROUND ALUMINUM WHEELS-SEPTEMBER 1982 THROUGH JANUARY 1983 BUILD VEHICLES - DIAGNOSIS
LIGHT TRUCKS 1983 RANGER
Some of the cast aluminum wheels used on 1983 Ranger 4x2's may have the mounting bolt holes located out of concentric. Vehicles with these wheels
installed will experience a vibration similar to an out of balance wheel/tire condition.
If a Ranger 4x2 with cast aluminum wheels and a build date between September 1, 1982 and January 27, 1983 exhibits a wheel/tire induced vibration, it
should be checked as follows:
1.
Remove suspect wheels from vehicle and locate the stamped date at the inside of the wheel disc. If the stamped date is between August 4 and
August 28, 1982, proceed to the next step. If the date is different, follow the standard NVH diagnosis per Section 18-01 of the Light Truck Shop
Manual.

If the date on the wheel is between August 4 and August 28, 1982, measure the distance between the wheel centerbore and each of the five lug nut
holes and record the values (Figure 9). Calculate the difference between the maximum and minimum of the five readings; if this value exceeds
0.02 inches, the wheel should be replaced.
