Steering - Vehicle Drift Condition

STEERING - DRIFT - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 9/84

LIGHT TRUCK 1983-85 RANGER 4x2/4x4, BRONCO II

Some 1983-85 Ranger/Bronco II vehicles may experience a minor steering drift condition while traveling straight down the road, with hands off the 
steering wheel and no brake application. This condition, termed "memory steer," is most noticeable after one or more full lock turns. If a vehicle is
suspected of having this condition, verify by performing the following test procedure:

After a full lock turn to the left, which results in a vehicle left drift, a subsequent full lock turn to right eliminates drift. Likewise, a full lock turn to
right resulting in a right drift, is eliminated with a full lock turn to the left.

If the vehicle responds as indicated in the test procedure, this condition can be corrected by replacing the steering linkage with a new design assembly.

Procedure for Removal and Installation of the Steering Rod and Line Assembly

1.

Raise the vehicle on a hoist with the wheels in the straight ahead position. (Refer to Section 50-04 hoisting, jacking and towing in the 1985
Ranger/ Bronco II Shop Manual.)

2.

Remove the cotter pins and nuts from the ball stud at the pitman arm and the spindle steering arms. Remove the ball studs from the spindle arms
and the pitman arm, using Tool 3290-C, tie rod end remover.

Loosely install the new rod and link assembly leaving the nuts hand tight. Ensure the steering wheel and front wheels are in the straight ahead
position. Ensure that the ball studs are firmly seated in the tapers before torquing the nuts. Tighten the nuts to 40-57 Nm (30-42 ft.lbs.) in the
following sequence: 1) pitman arm, 2) left spindle, 3) right spindle, 4) tie rod to drag link.

4.

Install four new cotter pins.

5.

Check and adjust toe-in as described in Section 14-01 of the 1985 Ranger/Bronco II Shop Manual.
