Safety Recall 482 - Certain 1984 Bronco II and Ranger 4x4 Vehicles For Front Wheel Drive Automatic Hub Lock Cam Replacement

Ford Direct Market Operations Service Recall Bulletin dated February 29, 1984

As you were advised in the above-referenced bulletin, Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in
certain 1984 Bronco II and Ranger 4x4 vehicles. The purposes of this bulletin are to: 1) provide supplementary information to that provided in the
referenced bulletin, 2) restate the technical and administrative instructions, and 3) provide you with a computer-generated listing of involved vehicles
and preprinted Forms 1864 for the recall service.

Vehicles Involved, Description of Defect and Correction & Owners/Dealers Action Information

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Certain 1984 Bronco II and Ranger 4x4 vehicles with optional front axle automatic locking hubs built from January 12 through February 22, 1984.
Vehicles with manual locking hubs are not included.

DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT AND CORRECTION:

The subject vehicles may have been built with improperly heat-treated front axle automatic locking hubs having cam assemblies that could fracture when
the vehicle is shifted into or operated in 4-wheel drive. It is possible that a broken piece of the cam assembly could lodge in the hub assembly and cause
the wheel retainer nut to "back off" the spindle. This would cause a front wheel to separate from a vehicle. This may occur without warning to drivers
and result in loss of vehicle steering and braking control with the potential for a vehicle crash.

To correct this condition the cam assemblies of the front wheel automatic locking hubs of all suspect front axle assemblies must be replaced. Front drive
axles having build date codes from January 11 through February 22, 1984 are suspect and must be corrected. NOTE: You were advised that some front
drive axle assemblies corrected at the assembly plant could be identified by either orange or orange and white paint daubs on the axle assembly. It has
been determined that the orange marking is not reliable for determining the need for drive hub repairs as other orange markings on the axle housing near
the lubricant fill plug were used to signify various axle assembly data. All vehicles shown on the listing that were released by dealers because of orange
paint codes must have the front drive hubs corrected. Vehicles with axles corrected at the assembly plant will have a blue paint daub just above the
lubricant fill plug.

AS YOU WERE ADVISED IN THE BULLETIN, INVOLVED VEHICLES ARE ON DELIVERY HOLD. DO NOT DRIVE, DEMONSTRATE OR
DELIVER ANY OF THE UNITS UNTIL THE FRONT AXLE AUTOMATIC LOCKING HUBS ARE INSPECTED AND, IF NECESSARY,
CORRECTED.

IF YOU HAVE DELIVERED ANY OF THE INVOLVED VEHICLES, YOU ARE URGED TO CONTACT THE OWNER, AND TO ADVISE THE
OWNER TO NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE IN 4-WHEEL DRIVE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES UNTIL THE SUSPECT FRONT WHEEL HUB
CAM ASSEMBLIES HAVE BEEN REPLACED.

PLEASE READ THIS BULLETIN IN ITS ENTIRETY. ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING ITS CONTENT SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO YOUR

Dealers that may have purchased suspect replacement cam assemblies from parts distribution centers are not to use the suspect parts. These parts must be
returned to Ford. Any of these parts already installed on vehicles must be replaced the same as for a vehicle involved in the recall. Report the service
completion on a blank Form 1864 and identify the form with Recall 482, Drive Hub. Labor times, parts costs and technical instructions in this bulletin
are applicable.

NOTIFICATION OF OWNERS/DEALER ACTIONS:

If parts are in short supply, vehicles already delivered to owners should be given priority over dealer stock vehicles. The enclosed list identifies units
delivered to your dealership which are involved in this recall. Other eligible vehicles may be brought to your dealership by their owners for this recall
service. Those units also are to be corrected as promptly as possible. If the owner of any eligible vehicle does not have a Customer Notification and
