TRANSMISSION - AUTOMATIC - C3/C5 - FLOOR SHIFTER DIAGNOSIS AND SERVICE
LIGHT TRUCKS 1983 RANGER & 1984 BRONCO II
The following concerns may occur on some early production Ranger automatic floor shifters. Concern diagnosis and service procedures are as follows:
Loose/Missing T-Handle Chrome Bezel:
Loose/missing chrome bezels have occurred on early production vehicles as a result of brittle glue fracture caused by direct impact loading of the bezel
during assembly plant shift handle installation. If the shift handle chrome and ring is loose, failing off, or missing, install a new handle assembly
(E3TZ-7213-C). Do not attempt to reattach the chrome ring to the handle by applying adhesive.
Shifter Assembly Upper Level Stick/Bind/Grab:
Upper level stick/bind/grab concerns have been traced to misalignment of the shifter dial bezel with the upper level. Such concerns can be resolved by
loosening the six bezel to floor pan attachment screws, bezel repositioning, and screw retightening.
T-Handle Button Pop-Out and Stick/Bind/Grab:
T-handle button pop-out and stick/bind/grab are related items which may be caused by the following separate or combined factors.
1.
Improper installation of the T-handle resulting in:

insufficient button retention due to incomplete handle installation.
^
damage to the shifter assembly upper roller or the plastic roller guide which retains the button in the outmost position.
^
displacement/damage to the button metal wear insert during T-handle installation.
2.
An out-of-specification T-handle resulting in:

excessive button actuation effort and shifter assembly locked-in-park due to button misalignment with the shifter assembly roller.
If any of the above symptoms are encountered, inspect the shifter for damage and replace the T-handle and button as outlined in the service procedure
below:
