Engine - No Start Condition

FORD:
1992-93 TAURUS, TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 
1992-93 SABLE, TOPAZ

LIGHT TRUCK:
1992-93 AEROSTAR, RANGER

ISSUE:
The engine may stop and not restart due to a lack of spark. This occurs because the distributor driven gear or camshaft drive gear has worn.

ACTION:
Replace the distributor and the camshaft as a set. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1.

Remove the distributor cap and crank the engine. If the rotor does not rotate, the distributor gear may be worn.

2.

Remove the distributor and confirm that gear is worn.

3.

If the distributor gear is worn, replace the distributor and the camshaft as a set. Refer to the parts block in this article for correct parts usage. Refer
to the appropriate 1992/93 Service Manual, Engine Section, for the removal and installation procedure.

4.

Drain the oil and replace the engine oil filter.

5.

Remove and clean the oil pan to eliminate any metal shavings. Refer to the appropriate 1992/93 Service Manual, Engine Section, for the removal
procedure.

6.

Clean the oil pump pick up screen of metal filings and check for proper function.

7.

Reinstall the oil pan.

8.

After the initial engine start with new assemblies, allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes prior to driving.

CAUTION:
WHEN REPLACING THE CAMSHAFT/DISTRIBUTOR AS A SET, YOU MUST LUBE THE ENTIRE CAMSHAFT, LOBES, BEARING
SURFACES AND SATURATE THE DRIVE GEAR WITH ENGINE ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT (D9AZ-19579-D) (ESR-M99C80-A). DIP THE
ENTIRE DISTRIBUTOR DRIVEN GEAR IN THE ENGINE ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT.

NOTE:
BEFORE INSTALLING THE DISTRIBUTOR, POUR THE REST OF THE ENGINE ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT (PINT) IN THE ENGINE OIL
THROUGH THE DISTRIBUTOR HOLE ONTO THE CAMSHAFT DRIVE GEAR.
