Canister Purge Solenoid: Description and Operation

Canister Purge Solenoid

Canister purging is regulated by a purge control solenoid valve, which is electronically controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The
normally CLOSED solenoid valve is located within the vapor line between the charcoal canister and the throttle body vacuum fitting. The solenoid valve
is designed to block fuel vapors from entering the intake manifold, while the engine is NOT RUNNING, and allows precise control of canister purging. 
In order to calculate the timing and duration that the canister is purged, the PCM monitors engine speed, load, and temperature until conditions are
favorable.  When the solenoid valve is OPENED, manifold vacuum is applied to the canister, and the fuel vapors are drawn into the induction system to
be consumed.
