Neutral Safety Switch: Service and Repair
Park/Neutral Position Switch
Removal and Replacement
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and position suitable safety stands under the vehicle.
3. Disconnect the park neutral position switch electrical harness from the start switch.
4. Remove the switch and O-ring using socket T74P-77247-A.
NOTE: This is a thin-wall socket.
Caution: Other tools could crush or puncture the walls of the switch.
Installation
1. Install the park neutral position switch and O-ring using T74P-77247-A.
2. Tighten the switch to 10-14 Nm (89-124 in-lb).
3. Connect the park neutral position switch electrical harness to the park neutral position switch.
4. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
5. Connect the negative cable to the battery post.
6. Check for proper operation with the parking brake engaged. The engine should start only with the transmission selector lever in PARK or
NEUTRAL positions. The back-up lamps should illuminate only with the selector lever in REVERSE position.
NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module relearns
its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the strategy.
