Sector Shaft: Adjustments
Pitman Shaft Overcenter Preload
CHECK
1.
Disconnect pitman arm at ball stud and remove horn pad from steering wheel.
2.
Turn steering wheel from one extreme to the other while counting total number of turns. Turn wheel back one half the number of turns so gear is
centered.
3.
Place inch lbs. torque wrench on steering wheel nut. Rotate steering shaft 90° either way across center. Observe highest reading. Overcenter
preload should be within specifications listed at end of section.
ADJUST
1.
Remove steering gear from vehicle.
2.
torque sector shaft cover bolts to 32-40 ft lb
3.
Loosen worm bearing adjuster plug locknut and tighten worm bearing adjuster nut until all endplay has been removed. Lubricate worm shaft seal
with drop of power steering fluid.
4.
Rotate worm shaft from one extreme to the other while counting total number of turns. Turn worm shaft back halfway to center gear.
5.
Using inch pound torque wrench, rotate worm shaft approximately 90° across center. Highest reading should be within specifications listed at end
of section. Turn sector shaft adjusting screw until proper specification is obtained.
6.
Hold sector shaft adjusting screw and torque locknut to 25 ft lb
