Parking Brake Control: Description and Operation
DESCRIPTION
The parking brake system is an independent system that is operated by the parking brake control. This parking brake control is mounted under the
dash as a foot-operated control. The parking brake control operates the parking brake system through cables and an equalizer assembly. Two
parking brake rear cable and conduits are connected to the parking brake cable equalizer. Each cable controls one rear brake.
OPERATION
When the parking brake control is applied, the front cable pulls the parking brake cable equalizer forward. The parking brake rear cable and
conduits attached to the parking brake cable equalizer pull the parking brake levers that are connected to the rear drum primary shoes. This action
activates a strut which causes the shoes to be forced against the brake drum. The parking brake control is held in the applied position by a
spring-loaded pawl and ratchet engagement.
