Crankshaft Main Bearing: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect ground cable at battery and set aside.
2. Remove engine accessory drive belt.
3. Remove oil pan.
4. Remove oil pump.
5. Replace one bearing at a time, leaving the other bearings securely fastened. Remove main bearing cap to which new bearings are to be installed.
6. Insert Main Bearing Insert Tool TOOL-6331-E or equivalent in the oil hole in the crankshaft.

NOTE:  Rotate remover against end of crankshaft main bearing opposite locating tang.

7. Rotate crankshaft in the direction of the engine rotation to force the bearing out of the cylinder block.
8. Clean crankshaft journals. Inspect journals and thrust faces (thrust bearings) for nicks, burrs, or bearing pickup that would cause premature bearing

wear.
