7. If the piston ring end gap is too small, the piston ring will have to be filed until the piston ring end gap is within specifications. The use of a ring
filing block helps ensure that the piston ring ends are filed square.
8. Using a piston ring expander, install the piston rings starting with the oil control rings. Make sure piston rings are installed right side up. Refer to
instructions with the piston ring set.
CAUTION: Install the piston rings after the piston has been installed on the connecting rod. Since the piston may be supported by the crown
during this operation, the piston rings could be damaged. Use a piston ring expander to install the piston rings. Attempting to wind them on by
hand may put a deep scratch in the piston or break the piston ring.
9. Rotate the piston rings so the piston ring end gaps are NOT lined up but are spaced properly as shown.
10. Use a feeler gauge to recheck piston ring side clearance.
