Brake Warning Indicator: Description and Operation
Brake System
All vehicles use a brake warning light in the instrument panel to warn of system malfunctions. The red brake warning light is used to indicate a low
fluid condition, or a parking brake not fully released condition.
The low fluid level sensor is located in the master cylinder reservoir and is an integral part of the reservoir. It consists of a float and magnet assembly
and a reed switch. When the fluid in the reservoir gets to a predetermined level, the magnet, which is attached to the float, actuates the reed switch,
causing the warning lamp to light. Loss of fluid from either the primary or the secondary system will cause this system to actuate.
Rear Anti-Lock Brakes
Vehicles are equipped with a rear anti-lock braking system and have an ANTI-LOCK BRAKE system light in addition to the BRAKE light. The
yellow ABS warning light is used to indicate a malfunction and a deactivation of the rear anti-lock brake system. The ABS warning light will light for
approximately 2 seconds when the ignition switch lock cylinder is initially moved to ON or START for circuit prove out.
