This manual is organised by Group, Section, Subsection and Page.
Group
A Group covers a specific portion of the vehicle. The manual is divided into 6 Groups:
  • 0 ‐ General
  • 1 ‐ Chassis
  • 2 ‐ Engine
  • 3 ‐ Electrical Systems
  • 4 ‐ Body
  • 9 ‐ Quick Reference
Section
Each Group is divided into sections. Each Section covers a component or system. The large number on the first page of the section shows the Section number.
Subsection
Each section is further sub ‐ divided into subsections when the Section contains more than one vehicle system, ie 01, 02, 03 etc. (Sections with only one system will still be identified with the subsection number 01). Each Subsection is listed below the main section title and all Subsection numbers are listed.
Page
Each page number is made up as follows - first two digits = Section number, second two digits = Subsection number, last digits = page number. eg. 29 ‐ 02 ‐ 10 is page 10 of Subsection 02 of Section 29.
Individual Operations
To save time normally spent looking through a complete operation for a particular component, the Subsection Content which lists the operations also gives a listing of the components which are covered in the Subsection - with a page number reference. For easier identification, the operations covering individual component listings are indented.
In some instances, the operation numbers of certain operations in the Subsection Content may be shown in brackets. This signifies that that operation is not covered individually in the manual but forms a part of the operation shown in brackets, to which reference should be made. This will be an aid to technicians requiring specific operation details while carrying out a procedure.
Locate the Section number in the Table of Contents – pages 00 ‐ 00 ‐ 1 and 00 ‐ 00 ‐ 2. All Sections are listed in numerical order.
Locate the Subsection number in the Table of Contents.
If necessary, locate the specific component required.
Locate the specific Page by using the Subsection Content.
Each Section/Subsection has a standard organisation that consists of the following information:
Subsection Content
An itemised list and page location of the content of the subsection, including component listing where appropriate.
General Specification
Information required during service and repair operations.
Description and Operation
Describes how the component or system works.
Service Adjustments and Checks
Describes how to perform necessary adjustments.
Service and Repair Operations
Any Special Tools, proprietary tools, equipment, materials or service items necessary for the operation will be listed at the beginning so that the technician can have them all to hand before starting.
Where possible, the information required can be seen in the graphics with many exploded views and individual component illustrations, with minimum reference to the text. The text itself is dual ‐ level, the heavy (bold) type being the main steps of the operation with further detail in normal type for those requiring additional instructions (refer to `Samples').

ItemPart NumberDescription
1-Right ‐ hand side of vehicle
2-Left ‐ hand side of vehicle
Technical data is included in operations at the point where it is needed, to remove the need to refer to a separate section.
If components need to be removed or dismantled in sequence they will be identified numerically in an illustration and the corresponding text will be numbered accordingly (refer to `Samples').
The removal and installation of some components is not covered in detail because the procedure is essentially simple and straightforward. Where a repair procedure is not covered, it may be for one of the following reasons:
  • The method of removal or renewal of the component may be obvious and not require coverage. Generally, only complex operations, or those requiring the use of Special Tools will be included.
  • The component may be classed as not repairable due to the requirement for specialist equipment to ensure its correct function and adjustment after repair.
  • The component may be classified as not economical to repair, with renewal being less costly than dismantling and overhaul.
  • The repair may be of specialist nature, possibly covered in another Ford publication. For instance; fuel injection equipment testing, overhaul and calibration.
Examples of dual ‐ level text, reference to Special Tools showing the tool in use, and how torque values are represented.
