Removal and Installation

Separator, Ball Joint

Removal

  1. Slacken the wheel nuts, raise the vehicle and remove the front road wheels.

  1. Slacken the track rod end castellated nut.
    1. Slacken the track rod locknut.
    1. Remove the castellated nut split pin and discard.
    1. Slacken the castellated nut.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:When the track rod end is separated from the spindle carrier the ball joint seal should be wrapped in a cloth to protect it.
    Release the track rod end from the spindle carrier.
    1. Release the track rod end.
    1. Remove the castellated nut.

  1. Remove the track rod end.
      NOTE:
      NOTE:Make a note of the number of turns required to remove the track rod end.
    1. Remove the track rod end.
    1. Remove the track rod lock nut.

  1. Remove the gaiter retaining clips.
    1. Remove the outer retaining clip.
    1. Remove the inner retaining clip.

  1. Remove the gaiter.
    1. On power steering variants disconnect the steering gear breather pipe.
    1. Slide the gaiter off the track rod.

Installation

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:If necessary clean the track rod before refitting the gaiter and track rod end. Install a new gaiter inner clamp.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the track rod end is installed by the same number of turns as was used to remove it.
    Refit the components in reverse order.

  1. Check the front wheel alignment. For additional information, refer to Section  204-00 Suspension System - General Information.
