Anti-Theft - Passive - Anti-Theft - Passive Streetka 2003.5 (01/2003-07/2005)
Description and Operation

The PATS is a theft prevention feature that prevents the engine from starting without the correct key. The system has been specifically designed to provide an effective passive vehicle immobiliser that requires no specific or additional action by the driver in order to activate it.

The PATS functionality is incorporated within the powertrain control module and operates through a miniature transponder which is embedded within the ignition key. The device is used to activate a transceiver module mounted around the ignition lock barrel which emits an electrical field to power a very short range radio transmitter within the ignition key. The system requires no independent battery power and there are no electrical connections between the key and the transceiver.

When the transponder is powered up within the key it transmits a coded signal that is unique to each key. Additional keys may be programmed either with the red "Master" key or with the FDS 2000.

It is impossible to access the codes stored within the PATS and the transponder within the key itself can be read only once it has received the correct coded signal, making key copying virtually impossible.

LED Indicator

The LED indicator is housed within the clock assembly and is used to indicate the state of the PATS. Whenever the ignition is switched on the indicator LED should remain on for approximately three seconds (indicating the system is functioning correctly). For further details of the LED indicator and diagnostic routines refer to the Vehicle Systems Test Manual, Section 33 (Vehicle Immobilisation Systems).

Keys

Up to 98½MY, three coded keys are allocated to every new vehicle (1 red master, 1 black key and 1 black torch key) and all three must be coded to the PATS in order for it to function correctly. The first key to be inserted into the ignition lock barrel is recognised by the system as the master key (red in colour).

NOTE:
NOTE:If the PATS module is renewed at any time, the master key must be the first key used This will ensure the owner/operator is able to programme additional slave keys (black in colour) if required.

The master key provided with every new vehicle should be kept in safe place and not be used as a normal key. It is the only key which will allow the owner/operator to programme additional slave keys.

For information on the programming of keys, refer to the sequence in this section.

From 98½MY onwards only two keys are allocated to every new vehicle. Both keys are required to programme additional keys by the owner/operator. Up to a maximum of eight keys may be programmed to the system.

Key Programming

Up to 98½MY

  • Insert the RED master key into the ignition switch and turn to position ll. When the LED illuminates, turn the key to position 0 and remove the key.
  • Check the LED goes OFF and then illuminates again for two seconds. The system is now in the programming mode for ten seconds.
  • Insert the slave key to be programmed and turn to position ll. The LED will flash once to indicate that the key has been programmed. Turn the key to position 0 and remove the key. To programme additional keys it is necessary to re-insert the RED master key and restart this procedure.

Reprogramming of the RED master key is carried out using FDS 2000.

From 98½MY onwards

NOTE:
NOTE:Additional keys can only be programmed with two "known'' PATS keys (A and B) or with FDS 2000.
NOTE:
NOTE:This procedure can be repeated after 20 seconds. If programming is unsuccessful, the anti-theft indicator LED will flash when the ignition is switched on with the key that was being programmed.
  • Insert key A into the ignition switch and turn to position ll.
  • Turn the key to position 0 and remove key A from the ignition switch.
  • Insert key B into the ignition switch and turn to position ll.
  • Turn the key to position 0 and remove key B from the ignition switch.
  • Insert the new key into the ignition switch and turn to position ll.
  • Remove the key from the ignition switch. The key is now programmed.
