BRAKE - PARKING - CHIRPING NOISE FROM REAR OF VEHICLE

FORD 1986 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE

A chirping noise from the rear of the vehicle may be caused by the rear brake cable spring rubbing the hub at the inside surface of the brake drum. To
verify this condition, drive the vehicle slowly with the parking brake slightly applied. If the noise stops, replace both rear cables with the newly designed 
parking brake cables (2A635), as outlined in Section 12-70 of the 1986 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual.

NOTE:

Wear on the inside of the brake drum hub between the heads of the wheel lug bolts and the outside diameter of the hub is acceptable. If the
heads of the wheel lugs are worn, vacuum the metallic dust from the brake components and replace the drum.
