Heater - Poor Performance In Extreme Cold

HEATER - POOR PERFORMANCE DURING VERY LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURES
FORD:
1986-91 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-91 SABLE
ISSUE:
Poor heater performance during very low ambient temperatures may be caused by the following items.

Improper adjustment of the blend door cable
^
Improper thermostat operation
^
Insufficient openings in the plenum assembly.
ACTION:
If poor heater performance is experienced, use the following service procedure to improve heater performance.
1. Make sure the blend door cable is adjusted properly. Refer to the 1986-91 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Sections 36-12 or 36-13, for service details.
2. Make sure the thermostat is working properly, Refer to the 1986-91 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 21-12, for service details.

3. On 1986-87 cars, confirm that additional openings were made in the plenum, Figure 1. If the openings were not added to the plenum, refer to TSB
87-7-5 and make the additional openings.
NOTE: THE 1986-87 TAURUS AND SABLE ARE THE ONLY CARS REQUIRING ADDED OPENINGS IN THE PLENUM. 1988-91
TAURUS/SABLE CARS COME EQUIPPED WITH THESE OPENINGS FROM THE FACTORY. THEY WERE INCORPORATED AS A
DESIGN CHANGE TO THE PLENUM ASSEMBLY.
