Vehicles built prior to May 13, 1986, with 3.0L engines and magnetic gauges may show a sudden or erratic needle movement past the "full" position.
Also, vehicles with the optional fuel computer will show "0 miles to empty" or "CO" (circuit open) on the distance to empty display. This condition is
caused by fuel pump vibrations that crack the fuel sender resistor card. This can be corrected by replacing the pump/sender assembly with an upgraded
service part. The new assembly can be identified by a 1/4" x 2-1/2" screw used in the fuel sender mounting tube.

The pump/sender assembly can be replaced by following the procedure in the Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 24-35-3.
