Brakes - Rattle At Rear of Vehicle

NOISE - BRAKES - RATTLE AT REAR OF VEHICLE - SEDAN ONLY

FORD 1986 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE

A rattling noise heard in the rear of the vehicle may be caused by the self-tapping screw attaching in the rear brake pressure control valve to the rear
lower suspension arm being stripped or broken. This condition can be corrected by using the following procedure.

1.

Raise vehicle on a hoist.

2.

Position the valve bracket on the lower suspension arm with the upper mounting hole of the bracket over the broken screw, or stripped hole, and
mark the lower mounting hole location on the suspension arm.

3.

Obtain a No. 4 size drill bit (.029" diameter), and drill a hole in the suspension arm.

Attach the valve bracket to the suspension arm using a new tapping screw (M6x1x16), part number N801008-S2, installed in the newly drilled
hole (Figure 6).

NOTE:

After the screw head has brought the bracket in contact with the suspension arm, torque the screw to 3 N-m (26.5 in.lbs.) maximum.

5.

Lower vehicle and road test to assure the rear brakes function properly. If any adjustment is required to the brake pressure control valve, refer to
Section 12-01, page 23, of the 1986 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual.
