Spindle: Service and Repair
SEDAN MODELS
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2.
Remove brake drum, then the brake hose-to-strut retaining clip.
3.
Remove brake backing plate attaching bolts, then the plate. Wire backing plate out of the way.
4.
Remove control arm-to-spindle attaching bolts, washers and nuts, then the tension strut nut, washer and bushing.
5.
Remove spindle-to-strut pinch bolt, then the spindle.
6.
Position replacement spindle onto tension strut, then onto shock strut.
7.
Install new strut-to-spindle pinch bolt. Do not tighten at this time.
8.
Install tension strut bushing, washer and new nut. Do not tighten at this time.
9.
Install new control arm-to-spindle attaching bolts.
10.
Using suitable jack, raise lower control arm to normal curb height, then tighten nuts and bolts as follows:
a. Torque spindle-to-strut bolt to 55---81 ft. lbs.
b. Torque tension strut nut to 52---74 ft. lbs.
c. Torque control arm-to-spindle attaching nuts to 52---74 ft. lbs.
11.
Install brake backing plate and brake hose-to-strut retaining clip.
12.
Install brake drum and wheel and tire assembly.
13.
Lower vehicle.
WAGON MODELS
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly. If vehicle is raised on frame contact hoist, position suitable jack under
lower control arm to raise arm to normal curb height.
2.
Remove brake drum and wheel bearings, then the brake backing plate.
3.
Remove upper control arms-to-crossmember attaching nuts and bolts.
4.
Remove bolt, one washer, adjusting cam and nut attaching spindle to lower control arm.
5.
Remove spindle and upper control arm as an assembly, then remove upper control arm-to-spindle attaching nut and the spindle.
6.
Install upper control arms to spindle using a new nut. Do not tighten at this time.
7.
Position spindle and upper control arm assembly on lower control arm. Install new nut and washer, existing adjusting cam and new nut. Do not
tighten at this time.
8.
Position front and rear upper control arms to body bracket, then install new nuts and bolts. Do not tighten at this time.
9.
Ensure lower control arm is at normal curb height, then proceed as follows:
a. Torque upper control arms-to-body bracket attaching bolts to 70---95 ft. lbs.
b. Torque upper control arms-to-spindle attaching nut to 150---190 ft. lbs.
c. Torque spindle-to-lower control arm attaching nut to 60---86 ft. lbs.
d. Install brake backing plate, brake drum and wheel bearings.
e. Install tire and wheel assembly, then remove jack assembly and lower vehicle.
