NOISE - "CLICK" FROM TILT STEERING COLUMN
FORD:
1986-89 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-89 SABLE 1988-90 CONTINENTAL
ISSUE:
A "clicking" noise from the tilt steering column may be heard whenever a side load is applied to the column or while traveling over rough
roads. This is caused by the steering column tilt lock lever pin.
ACTION:
Install a new dry-lubricated steering column tilt lock lever pin. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
REMOVAL
1. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 13-04 for service details.
NOTE:
IF THE COLUMN IS EQUIPPED WITH AN AIR BAG, FOLLOW ALL SERVICE PRECAUTIONS.
2. Remove the tilt column lock lever pivot pin and lever assembly from the steering column. Refer to the appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 13-04
for service details.

3. Move the tilt lock lever on the intermediate mounting bracket to the full open position and clamp it there, Figure 1.
