ISSUE:
A rattle from the safety belt retractor while traveling on rough roads or when the door is slammed may be caused by the safety belt retractor's
tension eliminator (TE) adjuster lever.
ACTION:
To correct this, install a new safety belt and retractor assembly which has a black vinyl coating on the safety belt retractor's tension
eliminator adjuster lever. Refer to the service part application chart that follows.

Remove center body "B" pillar trim panel and inspect lower area of safety belt retractor for either ordinary body tape or black vinyl coating on the
retractor's tension eliminator adjuster lever, Figure 5.
NOTE:
If body tape or black vinyl coating is present, do not replace safety belt and retractor assembly.

If body tape or black vinyl coating is not present, install a new safety belt and retractor assembly. Refer to the 1986 or 1987 Taurus/Sable Shop
Manual, Section 41-50.
NOTE:
Tighten all attaching bolts to 22-32 ft.lbs. (30-43 N-m).
3.
Reinstall center body "B" pillar trim panel.
