FORD:
1989-93 TAURUS SHO
ISSUE:
Brake roughness, pulsation and steering wheel shudder may occur during brake application. This may be due to disc brake rotor thickness variation or to
lining material transfer (the non-uniform trace transfer of lining material to the rotor, producing a slip/stick condition).
ACTION:
Use Rotunda on-vehicle brake lathes to service vehicles with brake roughness, per TSB 93-13-3. This repair method is more effective than "off-car"
brake rotor turning because it allows the steering knuckle to serve as a pilot for the rotor, resulting in improved runout.
If on-vehicle brake rotor turning equipment is not available, replace the front brake rotors. Replace the front brake lining with an improved lining kit.
Refer to the appropriate 1989-93 Taurus/Sable Service Manual for removal and installation procedures.
NOTE:
AFTER REPLACING THE ROTORS AND LININGS, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE CUSTOMER LIMITS BRAKING TO
MEDIUM-TO-LIGHT STOPS FOR THE FIRST 200 MILES AS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER MANUAL. THIS WILL GREATLY REDUCE
THE OPPORTUNITY FOR LINING TRANSFER.
