This TSB is being republished in its entirety to include 1994-95 model year vehicles.
ISSUE:
A "whining" noise from the timing belt may be caused by improper tensioning of the timing belt.
ACTION:
Perform the normal Noise/Vibration/Harshness (NVH) diagnostics in accordance with the 1993 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED)
Manual. If the timing belt is identified as the causal component, use the following service procedure to retension the belt. A new belt should be "run in"
and should stop making noise by 4000 miles (6437 km) of usage.
NOTE:
THIS PROCEDURE DOES NOT PERTAIN TO THE 3.2L SHO ENGINE BECAUSE IT HAS AN AUTOMATIC TIMING BELT TENSIONER.
1.
Disconnect the wiring to the Distributorless Ignition System (DIS) module or Electronic Ignition (EI) module.
2.
Remove the intake manifold crossover tube bolts, Figure 1.
3.
Loosen the intake manifold crossover tube hose clamps.
4.
Remove the intake manifold crossover tube.
5.
Remove the upper timing belt cover.
6.
Place the gear selector in NEUTRAL.
