Wheel Speed Sensor: Description and Operation
Wheel Sensor Assembly
This system uses four sets of variable resistance sensors and toothed speed indicator rings to determined the rotational speed of each wheel, Fig. 1. The
sensors operate on magnetic induction principle. For example, as the teeth on speed indicator ring rotate past a stationary sensor, a signal proportional to
speed sensor rotation is generated and transmitted to the electronic control unit (ECU) through a coaxial cable.
The front sensors are attached to suspension knuckles and the front speed indicators are pressed onto the outer constant velocity joints. The rear sensors
are attached to rear caliper adapter plates, and the rear speed indicator rings are pressed onto the rear hub assemblies.
