Vacuum Brake Booster: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation
1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Pump brake pedal several times to exhaust any vacuum in the booster.
2. Remove tubes from primary and secondary ports of master cylinder.
3. Disconnect manifold vacuum hose from booster check valve, then disconnect warning indicator.
4. Remove master cylinder retaining nuts and master cylinder.
5. Working under instrument panel, disconnect electrical connector from stop lamp switch.
6. Remove stop lamp switch retaining pin and white nylon washer. Slide switch off brake pedal pin enough so outer plate of switch clears the pin,
then remove switch from pin.
7. Remove brake booster-to-dash panel attaching nuts, then slide booster pushrod and pushrod bushing off brake pedal pin.
8. Remove vacuum outlet manifold attaching bolts, then position aside.
9. Position wiring harness aside.
10. Remove transmission shift cable and bracket.
11. Move booster assembly forwards until it clears dash panel, then remove booster.
12. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure proper clearance between pushrod and master cylinder exists.
b. Bleed brake hydraulic system. Refer to Brake Bleeding.
c. Torque booster to dash panel retaining nuts to 12-22 ft lb.
d. Torque master cylinder-to-booster locking nuts to 14-25 ft lb.
