Valve Clearance: Adjustments

NOTE:  The valves are adjusted by the use of shims placed between the camshaft and valve spring retainer. Valves must be adjusted with engine cold. 

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove upper intake manifold and valve covers.
3. Position cylinder for valves being inspected at Top Dead Center (TDC), compression.

4. Using a suitable feeler gauge, inspect clearance. Record clearance of any valve not within specifications.
5. Repeat procedure for each cylinder.
6. For each valve that requires adjustment, proceed as follows:

a. Ensure cam lobe is pointing directly away from lifter, then using lifter compressing tool T89P-6500-A, and lifter holding tool T89P-6500-B, or

equivalents, compress valve lifter.

b. Using a suitable pick tool or magnet, remove lifter shim from lifter.
c. Determine thickness of removed shim, then using previously recorded clearance determine the proper replacement shim size.
d. Install replacement shim with size marking down.
e. Repeat above procedure for each valve requiring adjustment.

7. Install valve cover and intake manifold, ensuring that all replaced shims are fully seated into lifters.
