Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation

Taurus Except LX

Removal

1. From inside vehicle, remove nuts retaining steering column tube boot (3C611) to dash panel (01610).
2. Remove two bolts retaining steering column gear input shaft coupling (3A525) to steering gear input worm gear and rack (3524).
3. Set steering column tube boot aside. Remove pinch bolt at power steering gear input shaft and control and remove steering column gear input shaft

coupling.

4. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
5. Remove LH front wheel.
6. Remove steering shaft u-joint shield (3F540).
7. Cut bundling strap retaining hydraulic power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose to steering gear.
8. Remove front wheel spindle connecting rod or ends from front wheel knuckle (LH)/ front wheel knuckle (RH).
9. Place a drain pan under vehicle and remove hydraulic power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose from steering gear.

Note:  The power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose are on the front of the steering gear housing. Do not mix them with the 
power steering left turn pressure hose (3A714) and power steering right turn pressure hose (3A717) on the side of the steering gear housing.

10. Remove steering gear retaining nuts.

Note:  The bolts are pressed into the steering gear housing and should not be removed during steering gear removal.

11. Push steering column tube boot end into vehicle and lift steering gear out of mounting holes.

Rotate steering gear so power steering gear input shaft and control will pass between brake booster and floorpan.
Carefully start working steering gear out through LH fender apron opening.

Note:  If steering gear seems to be stuck, check RH rod to ensure stud is not caught on any obstacle.

12. Rotate power steering gear input shaft and control so that it clears LH fender apron opening and complete removal of steering gear.

Installation

1. Install new plastic seals on hydraulic line fittings.
2. Insert steering gear through LH fender apron.

Rotate power steering gear input shaft and control forward to completely clear fender apron opening.
To allow steering gear to pass between brake booster and dash panel, rotate power steering gear input shaft and control rearward.

3. Align steering gear bolts to bolt holes and install retaining nuts.

Tighten to 115-135 Nm (85-100 ft-lbs.).

4. Lower vehicle.
5. From engine compartment, install hydraulic power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose.

Tighten power steering pressure hose to 20-35 Nm (15-25 ft-lbs.), and power steering return hose to 20-35 Nm (15-25 ft-lbs.).

Note:  Swivel movement of lines is normal when fittings are properly tightened.

6. Raise vehicle.
