Distributor (Typical) - Exploded View
Removal
1.
Disconnect primary wire connector from distributor.
2.
Prior to removing distributor cap, mark position of No. 1 wire tower on distributor base for future reference.
3.
Using a screwdriver, remove distributor cap and position aside with wires attached.
4.
Rotate engine until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke.
5.
Remove rotor, then TFI-IV harness connector.
6.
Remove distributor hold-down bolt and clamp, then distributor assembly. Some engines may be equipped with a security type hold-down
bolt. Use distributor hold-down wrench to remove distributor.
Installation
1.
Rotate distributor shaft so that blade on rotor is pointing toward mark made previously on base.
2.
While installing distributor assembly, continue rotating slightly so that leading edge of vane is centered in vane switch stator assembly.
3.
Rotate distributor in block to align leading edge and vane switch stator assembly and verify rotor is pointing at No. 1 cap terminal.
4.
Install hold-down bolt and clamp, do not tighten at this time.
5.
If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in block, pull distributor out of block enough to disengage distributor
gear and rotate shaft to engage a different gear tooth. Repeat steps 1 through 3 as necessary to achieve correct alignment.
6.
Install distributor cap, rotor and ignition wires, then Torque cap screws to 18-23 inch lbs.
7.
Check ignition timing and adjust if necessary, then Torque distributor hold-down bolts to 17-25 ft. lbs.
