This article is being republished in its entirety to expand the coverage to include 1989 Taurus/Sable vehicles.
ISSUE:
An air conditioning/heater blower motor, instrument cluster or other electrical accessories that operate intermittently may be caused by the ignition
switch wire harness terminals overheating. The # 687 accessory power circuit becomes inoperative when the ignition switch and mating wire harness
connector terminals overheat. This condition occurs more frequently on vehicles with 50,000 or more miles.
ACTION:
Install a new ignition switch wire harness modification kit that is more resistant to electrical loads. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Remove the ignition switch from the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 31-20 for service details.
NOTE:
DISCONNECT THE "PRNDL" CABLE BEFORE DROPPING THE STEERING COLUMN. REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE TAURUS/SABLE
SHOP MANUAL, SECTION 13-04 FOR SERVICE DETAILS.

3. Remove the eight (8) wire terminals from the 14401 ignition switch connector, Figure 1.
