Timing Chain: Diagrams
CAUTION: Timing chain size must be determined before timing the engine, by counting the teeth on the camshaft sprockets. Camshaft
sprockets with 36 teeth will have a 9.52 mm (3/8 in) chain. Camshaft sprockets with 42 teeth will have an 8 mm (5/16 in) chain. Failure to
identify the correct chain size before assembly will result in severe engine damage.
CAUTION: Failure to verify correct timing drive component positioning will result in severe engine damage.
Engines equipped with 8 mm (5/16 in) timing chains.

There should be 12 chain links between the front camshaft timing marks.

There should be 27 chain links between the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks.

There should be 30 chain links between the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks.
Engines with 9.52 mm (3/8 in) timing chains.

There should be 10 links between the camshaft timing marks.

There should be 23 links between the camshaft and the crankshaft timing marks.
