Taurus V6-3.0L VIN 2 Flex Fuel (1997)
Timing Chain: Testing and Inspection
1. Remove LH valve cover.
2. Loosen No.5 exhaust rocker arm and rotate to one side.
3. Install Dial Indicator with Bracketry TOOL-4201-C or equivalent on the end of push rod.
NOTE: This will take up slack on RH side of chain.
4. Turn crankshaft clockwise until No. 1 piston is at top dead center (TDC). The damper timing mark should point to TDC on the timing degree
indicator.
5. Zero the dial indicator.
NOTE: If the camshaft gear moves visably, but the dial indicator does not register movement, turn to crankshaft clockwise around once
completely (360°) and start test again.
6. Slowly turn crankshaft counterclockwise until the slightest movement is seen on dial indicator. This will take up slack on LH side of chain. Stop
and observe damper timing mark for number of degrees of travel from TDC.
7. If reading on timing degree indicator exceeds 6°, replace timing chain, crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket.
