Door - Wind Noise/Water Leaks

WINDNOISE AND/OR WATER LEAK - DOOR OPENING SEAL TO DOOR SURFACE

FORD 1983-84 THUNDERBIRD; 1984 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-84 COUGAR; 1984 TOPAZ, MARK VII

The limousine-type door sometimes requires a different approach to service door sealing concerns. The doors should be adjusted by setting the striker
and hinges first. If adjustment of the striker or hinges does not correct the leaks, the following procedure can be used.

1.

Remove the interior trim in the area of the leak.

2.

Pull the weatherstrip off the flange for approximately a foot either side of the leak area.

3.

Using a block of wood (a 6" piece of 2" x 4" is fine) and a hammer, caulk (beat the wood against the flange) the flange outboard 3 mm to 7
mm. (Care should be taken to prevent cracking the paint.)

4.

Reinstall the weatherstrip and confirm the seal contact is good.

5.

Reinstall interior trim.
