CAUTION: NEVER USE A SCREWDRIVER, PRY BAR OR SIMILAR TOOL TO PRY ON THE AUTOMATIC BELT TENSIONER LIFT-LUG

OR PULLEY OR DAMAGE CAN OCCUR, FIGURE 6.

Make sure the extension bar is fully seated into the lift-lug.

Using the extension bar, rotate the automatic belt tensioner counter clockwise until there is enough clearance to remove the belt from the
automatic tensioner pulley.

In some instances the use of a 3" long 3/8" drive extension bar placed in the lift-lug, used with the 12" - 18" long drive extension bar, can make it easier
to rotate the extension bar past the motor mount. When service requires that the alternator/power steering belt also be removed, the alternator can be
moved out of the way to make it easier to rotate the extension bar.

NOTE:

DO NOT REMOVE OR UN-TENSION THE WATER PUMP OR ALTERNATOR "V" BELT. ALLOW THE 6-RIB POLY "V" BELT TO
HANG FROM THE POWER STEERING PUMP. IF THE "V" BELTS ARE REMOVED, REINSTALL THEM USING THE GUIDELINES.

CAUTION: TENSION ON THE ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT IS MAINTAINED BY THE AUTOMATIC BELT TENSIONER AND CAN NOT BE

ADJUSTED. MOVEMENT OF THE AUTOMATIC BELT TENSIONER PULLEY WHILE IN OPERATION IS NORMAL.

Place the transmission in Neutral.

Start the engine and let it idle. Slowly increase the engine speed to 2500 RPM and then allow the engine to return to idle.

CAUTION: RUN ENGINE ONLY LONG ENOUGH TO PERFORM STEP 3.

If the "whining" noise is present, proceed to the "CHECK FOR TIMING CHAIN DAMPER" procedure below. If the "whining" is not present, the
noise is coming from another source.

Do not remove the front end accessory belts because this will disable the water pump. If the whining" noise is present, proceed to the "CHECK
FOR TIMING CHAIN DAMPER" procedure below.

2.

If the "whining" is not present, the noise is coming from another source.
