Fuel Pump Inertia Switch: Description and Operation

In the event of a collision, the electrical contacts within the inertia switch open and the fuel pump automatically shuts off. The fuel pump will shut off
even if the engine does not stop running. The engine, however, will stop a few seconds after the fuel pump stops operating. It is not possible to start the
engine until the inertia switch is manually reset. The inertia switch is located in the luggage compartment in the left tail lamp area on Lincoln Town Car,
Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis (sedan only), Thunderbird, Cougar, Mustang and Capri (three door models). The inertia switch on 2-door Mustang and
Capri models is located near the lefthand tail lamp area. The inertia switch is located in the left side storage compartment on Crown Victoria and Grand
Marquis station wagon models. The inertia switch on Escort and Lynx models is located on the lefthand side of the vehicle behind the trim panel which is
behind the rearmost seat. On EXP models the inertia switch is located on the left side of the vehicle, inside the rear quarter panel shock tower access
door. On Tempo and Topaz models the inertia switch is located on the lefthand side of the luggage compartment, Fig. 4. On 1986 - 88 Taurus and Sable,
the inertia switch is located on door hinge support above the lefthand inner wheel well on Sedan models and on Station Wagon models, rear lower corner
pillar reinforcement. To reset the switch, depress the button on the switch assembly. Do not reset the switch until the fuel system has been checked for
leaks.
