Suspension Spring ( Coil / Leaf ): Service and Repair
Front
1.
Raise front of vehicle and position safety stands under jack pads located rearward of wheels, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2.
Disconnect caliper and wire it out of the way without disconnecting brake lines.
3.
Disconnect stabilizer bar link from lower control arm.
4.
Remove steering gear attaching bolts, and position gear aside.
5.
Disconnect tie rod from spindle using tool 3290-C, or equivalent.
6.
Using spring compressor tool T82P-5310-A, compress spring until it is free from lower seat.
7.
Remove two lower control arm pivot bolts and disengage control arm from frame, then remove spring from seat. If a replacement spring is to be
installed, measure compressed length of spring being removed to assist in compressing and installing the replacement spring.
8.
Reverse procedure to install. When installing spring, locate lower end of coil between two holes in lower control arm spring pocket. On 1982
models, torque lower control arm pivot nuts to 215-260 ft. lbs., stabilizer bar to lower control arm nut 6-12 ft. lbs. and steering gear to
crossmember bolts to 90-100 ft. lbs. On 1983-87 models, torque control arm pivot nuts to approximately 150 ft. lbs., stabilizer bar link nut to 6-12
ft. lbs., steering gear to crossmember nuts to 90-100 ft. lbs., and tie rod end to 35 ft. lbs.
