Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2. Remove brake drum.
3. Install suitable wheel cylinder clamp over ends of wheel cylinder to retain pistons in bore.
4. Disconnect parking brake cable from parking brake lever.

5. Remove two brake shoe hold-down retainers, springs and pins.
6. Spread brake shoes over piston shoe guide slots, then lift shoes, springs and adjuster off backing plate as an assembly.
7. Remove adjuster spring.
8. Remove retracting springs to separate shoes.
9. Remove parking brake lever retaining clip, spring and washer.
10. Remove lever from pin.
INSTALLATION
1. Lightly lubricate backing plate shoe contact surfaces with suitable brake lubricant, such as Motorcraft WA-10.
2. Install parking brake lever to trailing shoe with spring washer and new retaining clip.
3. Position trailing shoe or backing plate and attach hand brake cable.
4. Install adjuster assembly to slots in brake shoes. Socket end must fit into slot in leading shoe (wider slot). Slot in adjuster nut must fit into slots in
trailing shoe and parking brake lever.
5. Install adjuster lever on pin on leading shoe and to slot in adjuster socket.
6. Install upper retracting spring in slot on trailing shoe and slot in adjuster lever. Adjuster lever should contact star and adjuster assembly.
7. Assemble parking brake cable to trailing shoe and parking brake lever.
8. Install lower retracting spring to leading-trailing shoe.
9. Install assembly to backing plate fitting shoes into wheel cylinder piston slots.
10. Install adjuster socket to leading shoe and lining assembly.
11. Install brake shoe anchor pins, springs and retainers.
12. Remove brake cylinder clamp and install brake drum. Tighten hub nut to 188-254 ft lb.
13. Install wheel/tire assembly and tighten lug nuts to 85-105 ft lb.
