OVERHEATING - DURING HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES (+85~ AND ABOVE) AND PROLONGED IDLE MODE (5.0L)

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-84 COUGAR
A condition of the engine temperature warning light coming on with no loss of coolant during high ambient temperatures and prolonged idle mode may
be serviced using the following procedure:

Remove and discard the cooling fan, water pump and pulley.

Install a new fan using part number E4SZ-8600-B and the water pump and pulley using part numbers E1AZ-8501-A and E4SZ-8509-A. Torque
attaching bolts to specification.
^
Reinstall the drive belt and set tension to 110-130 lbs.ft.

On vehicles built prior to January 7, 1984 install right and left radiator air deflectors as shown in Figure 11.

Fill the cooling system to correct specification.
^
Verify that the engine hot idle speed is set to specification.
NOTE:
If vehicle usage applies to heavy traffic stop and go driving for long periods of time in hot weather, owner should be advised to occasionally
place the gearshift selector in P (PARK) or N (NEUTRAL) to increase the engine idle speed. This aids in engine cooling and air conditioner
