Wheel Bearing: Testing and Inspection
Front
DESCRIPTION
The front wheel bearings are pregreased, sealed and require no scheduled maintenance. The front wheel bearings are preset and cannot be
adjusted. If a bearing is disassembled for any reason, the wheel hub assembly must be replaced.
PROCEDURE
Front wheel bearings that need replacing may be indicated by a noise that occurs only when turning. To diagnose the front wheel bearings:
1. Road test the vehicle on a smooth road. Make sharp turns to the right and left.

If the vehicle makes noises on right turns, the left wheel bearing may need to be replaced.

If the vehicle makes noises on left turns, the right wheel bearing may need to be replaced.

If wheel bearing noise is heard on either right or left turns, the wheel hub assembly on the suspected side should be removed and inspected.
2. Spin the tire quickly by hand and make sure the tire turns smoothly without noise from the wheel bearing.
3. Remove the wheel and front disc brake caliper. See Brakes and Traction Control.
4. Position Dial Indicator with Bracketry TOOL-4201-C or equivalent against the wheel hub, then push and pull the wheel hub. Measure the end play
of the wheel hub assembly. There should be no perceptible end play. If there is perceptible end play, replace the wheel hubs.
