Removal and Installation

15-077Rear hub nut wrench
Remove

1. Release the handbrake, raise the vehicle and remove the front road wheel.

2. De‐adjust the automatic brake adjuster.
3. Mark the drum and hub to assist in realignment and remove the drum.

CAUTION:

Take care not to damage the axle casing oil seal.

4. Remove the driveshaft.

5. Remove the hub nut.

6. Remove the hub.

7. Remove the leading shoe.
1. Remove the hold down pin spring and cup.
2. Disengage the lower end of the shoe from the abutment bracket.
3. Disconnect the lower return spring.
4. Disengage the upper end of the shoe from the wheel cylinder.
5. Remove the upper return spring.

8. Remove the trailing shoe.
1. Remove the hold down pin spring and cup.
2. Pull the shoe clear of the wheel cylinder and abutment bracket.
3. Disconnect the handbrake cable.

9. Dismantle the leading shoe.
1. Remove the spring clip from the ratchet pawl.
2. Remove the washer, spring and pawl from the pivot pin.
3. Remove the spring clip from the ratchet.
4. Remove the ratchet and washer from the shoe.

10. Dismantle the trailing shoe.
1. Remove the return springs and strut from the handbrake lever and shoe.
2. Remove the spring clip, pivot pin, washer and lever from the shoe.
Install
11. Clean the carrier plate and apply a smear of anti seize grease to the contact points of the carrier plate and brake shoe.
12. Assemble the trailing shoe.
   Apply a smear of grease between the handbrake lever and the brake shoe web.
13. Reconnect the handbrake cable to the lever.
14. Refit the trailing shoe.
15. Assemble the leading shoe.
   Apply a smear of grease between the adjust ratchets and the pivot pins.
16. Refit the leading shoe.
17. Refit the upper and lower brake shoe return springs.
18. Refit the shoe hold down pin, spring and retaining clip.
19. Refit the hub.

NOTE:

The hub nut for the left hand side is marked with a groove indicating that it has a left hand thread.

20. Refit the hub nut.

CAUTION:

Take care not to damage the axle casing oil seal.

21. Refit the driveshaft.
1. Refit the spacer ring.
2. Refit a new `O' ring.
3. Refit a new gasket.
4. Refit the drive shaft.
22. Refit the brake drum.
23. Install the road wheel, refer to specifications for the wheel nut torque.
24. Lower the vehicle.
25. Apply the footbrake to adjust the brake pads.
