Description and Operation The steering gear, which is of a rack and pinion design, fitted to both right and left hand drive variants, operate on similar principles. The steering gear is connected to the stub axles by track rods with integral inner ball joints. The ball joints are similar to those currently used on passenger car variants. The steering gear is is fitted to the front suspension crossmember. The steering column incorporates an upper universal joint on the column shaft that connects via a coupling shaft and another flexible coupling to the steering gear pinion. The steering column has a master spline and can only be correctly fitted in one position. Any adjustment of the steering wheel position must be done by track rod adjustment. The upper steering column is fixed to a mounting brace and the the lower column to the bulkhead. 1 | Steering column | 2 | Steering wheel | 3 | Lower flexible coupling | 4 | Steering gear | 5 | Track rod end | 6 | Track rod | 7 | Bellows | 8 | Coupling shaft | 9 | Upper flexible coupling | |
