Description and Operation
All the body glass fitted to the 95MY Transit, other than the windscreen, is of the flat glass type fixed into a rubber weatherstrip which is in turn retained by a flange in the vehicles bodywork.
The windscreen however, is of the direct glazed type fixed to the aperture by means of a P.U. (polyurethane) adhesive bead.
The glass also constitutes a partial stress member in the vehicles construction and so it is therefore important that the correct fitting procedures are followed during replacement.
In addition to fixing the glass to the aperture, the adhesive bead also forms a watertight seal around the inner edge of the glass.
To ensure good adhesion and sealing of a direct glazed window it is essential that the correct materials are used and that the P.U. adhesive is allowed to cure.
P.U. adhesive cures by reaction with air moisture. Temperature alone does not affect the rate at which the adhesive will cure. However, temperature does have a direct bearing on the moisture content of air and will therefore be an important element in determining the curing period required. The cure time for a warm, humid environment will be considerably shorter than that for a cool, dry atmosphere and care should be taken:
Should the ambient temperature fall below 0°C within two hours of applying the P.U., the cure time allowance will have to be adjusted to ensure that a full two hour curing time at a temperature of above 0°C is provided.

WARNING:

For vehicles fitted with a passenger side airbag this curing period must be extended to a minimum of ten hours. The passenger side airbag utilises the windscreen as a pressure base during deployment and it is therefore essential to ensure the curing process has been fully completed.

The P.U. adhesive supplied in the Ford Parts windscreen repair kit (Part No. 84AG‐TO3863‐AA) is easier to apply when warmed, and the unopened cartridge should therefore be placed in warm water for approximately ten (10) minutes prior to application.
An oscillating cutter and an assortment of special cutting blades, a cartridge gun, two glaziers' suction cups and the cleaner, primer and other elements in the Ford repair kit, will be needed to perform direct glazing operations.

WARNING:

The solvent content of the cleaner supplied in the Ford parts windscreen repair kit (yellow topped container) has been subjected to a solvent content change and as a result will have an adverse chemical reaction with cured P.U. remains. This must therefore only be used to clean new glass and not the trimmed P.U. as previously instructed.
