PARKING BRAKE - MAY NOT RELEASE
LIGHT TRUCK:
1995-98 WINDSTAR
ISSUE:
The parking brake may not release on some vehicles. This may be caused by the release rod within the parking brake release assembly fracturing.
ACTION:
Replace the parking pawl actuating rod only. The actuating rod can be replaced without replacing the parking brake control assembly. The parking brake
control assembly does not need to be removed from the vehicle to perform this repair. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
REMOVAL
1.
If the parking brake is not already in the applied position, apply the parking brake approximately half way to accommodate removal of the parking
brake control boot.
2.
Pull up on the front of the boot at the base to release the locking tab.
NOTE:
WHEN REMOVING THE PARKING BRAKE CONTROL HANDLE COVER/BOOT, DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE FORCE WHEN PRYING
OUT THE LOCKING TAB. THIS MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE LOCKING TAB.
3.
Insert a screwdriver into the slot on the bottom of the parking brake control handle and pry out the locking tab carefully until the handle/cover
slides off the parking brake control.
4.
Remove the parking brake control boot/cover.
5.
Inspect the release rod to see if it is broken.
6.
If not broken, follow the published diagnostic procedure to determine why the brake cannot be released.
7.
If broken, remove the pieces of the broken rod from parking brake control assembly.
8.
Retain the release button spring for installation on the new rod.
INSTALLATION
1.
Install the release button spring onto the new Parking Pawl Actuating Rod (F78Z-2700-AA).
