This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to show the correct part number.
ISSUE:
A "droning" noise and/or vibration in the steering wheel may be felt at high speeds on some vehicles. This may be due to either overtorquing or
undertorquing the front axle wheel hub retaining nut which may damage the wheel bearing.
ACTION:
Replace the front wheel bearing assemblies. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Road test the vehicle to verify the customer's concern.
2.
Carefully place the gearshift lever in the "N" position and coast through the speed range at which the concern was noted. If the noise or vibration
changes, do not replace the front wheel bearings as described in this TSB article. Follow the diagnostic procedures in Section 05-04 of the 1995
Windstar Service Manual.
3.
If the noise or vibration remains constant in "N", rotate and balance all four (4) tires. If this has no effect on the concern, replace the front wheel
bearings as described on Page 04-01-5 of the 1995 Windstar Service Manual.
CAUTION:
THE AXLE HUB RETAINING NUT IS A TORQUE PREVAILING NUT DESIGN AND CANNOT BE REUSED. THE REPLACEMENT NUT
MUST BE TORQUED TO 213-287 N.m (157-212 LB-FT). DO NOT USE AN IMPACT WRENCH TO TIGHTEN THIS NUT.
