Neutral Safety Switch: Service and Repair
NOTE: The neutral safety switch is incorporated into the Transaxle Range Sensor (TR) attached to the transaxle and connected to the manual control
lever shaft.
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise an support vehicle.
3. Disconnect harness from transaxle range sensor.
4. Remove bolts and lift transaxle range sensor off manual control lever shaft.
INSTALLATION
1. Shift transaxle into neutral position.
2. Install transaxle range sensor onto manual control lever shaft, ensure engagement of sensor to pin on shaft, then loosely install two mounting bolts.
3. Align sensor to manual lever using alignment tool No. T92P-70010-AH or equivalent, then torque retaining bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs.
4. Remove alignment tool, then connect harness to sensor.
5. Connect battery ground cable, ensure vehicle will only start in Park and Neutral position and that back-up lights function.
NOTE: Vehicle specific information about operation, stored in PCM using battery backed up memory, may be lost when battery is disconnected.
If this occurs poor engine performance, stalling and other driveability problems may occur. It may be necessary to drive the vehicle for up to 10
miles to allow the PCM to relearn this information.
